Let's talk about something we all struggle with: rest. We live in a culture that celebrates being busy. We're taught that if we're not constantly doing something, we're wasting time. Especially as moms, the pressure to keep going, keep working, and keep giving can be overwhelming. But today, I’m here to tell you that it’s okay to rest—and more importantly, it’s necessary.

The Myth of Constant Productivity

We’ve been conditioned to believe that our worth is tied to how much we can accomplish. This mindset is exhausting and harmful. It’s time to change the narrative and recognize that rest is not a sign of weakness, but a vital part of a healthy, balanced life.

Here’s why rest is essential:

Rest Recharges Us: Just like our phones, we need to recharge to function properly. Without rest, we burn out and can’t perform at our best.
Rest Boosts Creativity: When we take time to relax, our minds have the space to wander and come up with new ideas. That’s why some of our best thoughts come to us in the shower!
Rest Improves Health: Chronic stress and exhaustion can lead to a host of health problems. Rest helps reduce stress, lowers the risk of heart disease, and boosts our immune system.

Practical Ways to Rest Without Guilt

Implementing rest into your life doesn’t have to be complicated. Here are some simple ways to start:

Schedule It In: Just like you would with any other important task, put rest on your calendar. Whether it’s 10 minutes of quiet time or an afternoon off, make it non-negotiable.
Create a Restful Environment: Dedicate a space in your home for relaxation. Fill it with things that calm you, like books, candles, or soft blankets.
Set Boundaries: Learn to say no. It’s okay to decline invitations or tasks that will overwhelm you. Your health and well-being come first.
Practice Mindfulness: Spend a few minutes each day in meditation or deep breathing. This can help center your mind and body, making it easier to rest.
Take Breaks: Throughout your day, take short breaks to stretch, breathe, or simply sit quietly. These mini-breaks can make a big difference.

Here are 10 concrete examples of ways to rest:

Read a Book: Escape into a good novel or an interesting non-fiction book.
Take a Nap: A 20-30 minute nap can rejuvenate you.
Enjoy a Bath: Soak in a warm bath with Epsom salts and essential oils.
Listen to Music: Play your favorite relaxing music and let your mind unwind.
Go for a Walk: A leisurely walk in nature can be very refreshing.
Practice Yoga: Gentle yoga stretches can help relax your body and mind.
Watch a Movie: Enjoy a feel-good movie or binge-watch a series you love.
Journal: Write down your thoughts and feelings to clear your mind.
Garden: Spend time tending to your plants or starting a garden project.
Disconnect: Turn off your devices for a while and enjoy some screen-free time.

A Personal Note

I used to wear my busyness like a badge of honor. But over time, I realized it was making me miserable. I started small—just a few minutes of quiet here and there. Gradually, I began to see the benefits, and now, I make rest a priority. It’s transformed my life.

I challenge you to start prioritizing rest today. Schedule some time for yourself this week and see how it makes you feel. And if this resonates with you, share it with a friend who might need the reminder too. Let's support each other in creating a culture where rest is valued and celebrated.

Take care, and remember: you deserve to rest.
